It's not a lie.. if you live in San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose.. 100k here is like making 35k in Texas or the midwest.

it averages out to 40k or more a year just for a decent apartment. traveling is expensive. food cost more here. if you rent a car the gas is 75 percent more here. restaurants give half portions compared to the midwest and cost twice as much. theaters are twice as much here.

electronic in stores are regulated.. only tax is more (10% for city tax alone on items)

I'm not convinced about the food. Sure, the price for a meal at some midwest diner is going to be less than in a downtown restaurant but so is the food. Comparing like just normal non-fine-dining food (say a casual thai restaurant) I think prices are about the same, that is if you can actually find a thai place in your given midwest town/city.

Also travel is expensive everywhere, it's not like airfare out of SFO is any higher than like Seattle.

Car ownership and rent do kill though.

For comparison a chinese buffet in Southern Ohio is $11 out the door, gas is 2.60 a gallon, and the average rent is $550.

An overwhelming amount of the "fine dining" establishments I've visited have been worse than comparable "holes in the wall".

Well as reststop stated, it's cheaper. Gas is 50-1.00 cheaper for sure at almost all the days of the year. especially during Winter when additives are added for California fuel.

You're right, Airfair at SFO isn't much different, sometimes cheaper being a hub, yet car ownership and to house a car or have it "smash and grab a few times a year" can add up. insurance is way higher than the midwest. Rent is insane. 550 is what you could pay in Oakland for a 2 beedroom house some 5-10 years ago. in the worst neighborhood in the bay area. now those same neighborhoods are like 3500-4000 for the same houses to rent.

even a 1 bedroom in a crummy area with crack dealing still going on up the street, is 2000.

Bart is going up in price since another Strike is on the way.
