mashlehash victim of incest [my perspicuously dependant flavourlessness]
I turned on the stove and took a large drag, while inhaling propane.

My lungs are fucked. I am fucked

how do you know it was propane and not methane

Propane is fairly inert in the lungs AFAIK. It may have some chemicals in it to make it smell, but those are in pretty minor proportions.

Interestingly propane and butane (and also methane)is useful for killing animals, as it acts as an asphyxiant. When you feel a need to breathe in you are experiencing the feeling of CO2. Mammals can't really detect a lack of oxygen, they just nod off. If you breathe in propane, butane, helium, methane, etc, you don't feel anything, you just drop off to sleep.

This is super misleading. Mammals definitely know when they're lacking oxygen. We would not have lived this long without it. Hold your breath. Keep holding it. You feel light headed? That's how you know. Breathe in something that is not oxygen and you will still feel light-headed.

Yeah you feel light headed AFTER you breathe in, because of oxygen. The same as you feel a burning feeling when you plunge your cold toes into warm water.

Same way you feel lightheaded if you artificially breathe deeply for a period of time.

You don't feel any sort of suffocation reflex from a simple lack of oxygen. Suffocation is a result of sensing CO2 and not of a lack of fresh air, as you might expect.

    No?

sensing C02 = sensing lack of oxygen. What biological mechanism are you talking about here when you say mammals 'can't sense a lack of oxygen' because unless you have one this is a dumb argument. Though I would be interested to see if there actually is something concrete here.

    Fucking google it you cunt.

You seem intent on nothing more than wasting my time.

Goddam, just fuck off would you?

EDIT: wait. Give me your address. I'll send you a helium bottle, a regulator and a facemask. When you start feeling low in O2 you take the mask off, OK? You have to Skype it.

thats why they call methane 'natural gas' or 'CNG'...purely marketing reasons. after all...no one wants to think theyre using nasty-ass ass-gas to cook their dinner.

another marketing myth: large-displacement commercial trucks are using 'natural gas' (ass-gas) in place of gasoline or diesel fuel for the specific reason of METHANE IS THE CHEAPEST FORM OF FOSSIL FUEL AVAILABLE and the bullshit they try shoveling that its 'cleaner' than gasoline is purely bullshit. methane is so cheap the fossil-fuel miners literally burn it off instead of packaging it for shipping.

most retail-sold compressed-gas canisters (NOT counting the 'big' tanks for welding gasses) to fuel stoves, lights, heaters, torches, etc are propane.

they sell smaller quantities, in comparison to propane, of compressed gasses like butane/isobutane/whatever for camping stoves or torches but they have nowhere near as many applications as propane.

its annoying as fuck that these companies have to give things fancy-sounding names to their junk instead of what actually is being sold. methane='natural gas'...naptha='white gas'...ffs...

    the body senses CO2...not O2

that is why hyperventilating before trying to dive/hold breath is done...it reduces the amount of detectable CO2 in the blood. it gives a false sensation to the bodys sensors that low CO2= repressed autonomous breathing response.

Flares are sometimes Ethane and other minority gases. I do agree it's a shame that those are flared at all. The reason they are flared at all is because waste gases contain sulphur, which tends to cause corrosion to all metals nearby.

As a result oil well blowouts have been sometimes set alight deliberately, not because a blowout fire helps, but just to preserve steel and silverware nearby.

We should be collecting every atom we can of Argon and Helium (and other noble gases) from natural gas, but we aren't. Those elements/gases are only found in reasonable quantities in natural gas, as a result of radioactive decay deep within the earth. The reason they aren't collected is cos it isn't economically worth while - right now.

Switch that with nitrous oxide and you've got a deal.
