The US currently controls less than a third of Afghanistan and is talking about a massive new 'surge' of troops, adding up to 20,000 if memory serves, who are acting more or less as security guards for the opium industry.
As for Iraq, the US has some large military bases and very little control over anything - even the puppet leaders they put in place after destroying the government/military structures (in turn giving ISIS a large number of ex-military commanders) have largely been pushing for them to GTFO.
You could argue that the US' mission is simply to create chaos and low-level warfare in foreign lands and in that regard they've been largely successful, but for a number of reasons that is coming to an end. -

Cost-benefit mostly - there's little to be gained; it was largely just a way to try to one-up the Russians being the first to put people (and a dog) in space. Further, they wouldn't have been able to do it without filling NASA with German scientists... It's probably more accurate to say that Nazis put an American on the moon. -

As a result of minorities white Americans want to have guns, so gun culture, which has gotten to an extent that would be regarded as being retarded in a homogenous country, is still a thing.
Also because jedis and Brits have a lot of influence and keep involving America in stupid wars. And the jedis want to take over America, so keep attacking and mocking white Americans in the media, especially every time they do something they don't like, like electing Trump. That media is consumed by a lot of non-Americans, who see the cohesive narrative they are being presented with and take it for truth.
I don't really like living in America, but there are worse places to be. The people whinging about America don't usually move out of it for example. -
