we're not trying to rate a movie here.

playing MSGs are purely an experience thing, and its best experienced in the culture that gave rise to it.

besides ... it was quite funny when the soldiers express their surprises in japanese upon seeing moving cardboard-te.

anyway i never get to finish MSG1 due to the fact that i got myself japanese discs and there was no internet to get walkthrus in those days.

    20years .. gone so fast.

STILL playing Skyrim. I was pretty far into it, then the special edition was released so I started completely over. I only get about 2 hours/week at it so its going to take me eons to complete, but one day....

That's fucking retarded. It is a language option and the voice acting is categorically worse in the Japanese versions. Kojima himself considers the English version to be the "real" version and the Japanese language version to be the "translation". Kojima writes his games in English too. In MGS1 they have a conversation about the English language that seems scathing but it's clear Kojima is talking about it as rightfully dominant.

The reactions are just as funny in English

    nope.

Jeremy Blaustein, who previously worked on the English localization of Snatcher for the Sega CD, wrote the English version of the script.[5] One change in the English script was the addition of Western sources and authors to Mei-Ling's pool of motivational quotes; originally the character only cited Chinese proverbs natively, providing an explanation afterward in Japanese, but this proved difficult to adapt during the translation.[60] The games detected by Psycho Mantis when he reads the player's memory card were also changed, due to certain titles (such as the Tokimeki Memorial series) not being released outside Japan. This resulted in Kojima's cameo (in which he thanks the player for supporting his work via a voiceover) being cut from the Western versions, as save data from two PlayStation titles not available outside Japan, Snatcher and Policenauts, needed to be present on the player's memory card for this Easter egg to appear.[61]

the gane was first written in japanese for japanese and then modded to fit western markets.

but i get it tho ... you prefer the american version, so lets just leave it there becos honestly ...

we're just too old to be arguing about video games anymore.

Is there a Japanese audio option with English subs? I wouldn't be able to understand enough of the Japanese to play without them. If there is that's probably what I'll do. Hadn't really thought about it being a Japanese release originally

There is no reason to play it in Japanese. It's not like anime. Please don't listen to Benny

dont listen to that racist paki. the japanese version is very different from the american release, most notably in terms of easter eggs.

but to each their own i guess,

The English VA is overwhelmingly superior to the JP VA. The JP VA isn't awful or anything, but the English VAs are really, really good (some are excellent, such as Greyfox and Otacon) and distinctive, whereas the JP ones are pretty generic and not really interesting.

Each member of the supporting cast (like all the Codec support operators) is very distinctive and interesting in English. Most importantly, David Hayter's voice acting as Snake is incredibly iconic, whereas the Japanese actor sounds generic as well.

And I guess this is a weaker reason but all the characters are Americans, so it's more thematically fitting to play it in English.
  19. Plus you will understand a lot more MGS memes and references if you play it in English.
