   It only appears that way due to their irregular shaping. Potato chip bags are filled by weight, not by volume. You need to maintain a certain ratio of air to chip mass to keep them safe, and this ratio changes by the size and shape of the bag.
   
   When you find a chip bag that's "almost full", the chances are that the chips have simply arranged themselves in a way where there a lot of gaps between them, and their total volume seems bigger.
   
   Imagine 2 playing cards, stacked atop each other. They occupy very little space. Now stand them up and lean them against each other to make a little teepee: the structure is occupying more space than the cards themselves. Such is the case with chips.

   no, not at all. what happens to chips after you tip them out into a bowl and come back to them a few hours later? if they put air in the bag the same thing would happen, the oxygen in the air would react with the chips. they fill it with pure nitrogen because it doesn't cause that reaction and keeps the chips fresh.

    The CO2 molecule contains two oxygen atoms. This is true. But they can't just leave the molecule whenever they feel like it to behave like oxygen. This is why you would die if you tried to breathe in pure CO2.
