I think there are more experiences in life that can build character than being abused as a child.

I was hit once as a child at the age of 12 or 13 for staying up too late.
That is the only time my father has ever done anything like that.
However, at the age of 9 or 10, me and my brother vandalized these wonderful deer statues on the land lord's property.
(We lived in a log cabin community and the land lord or tenant watched over the whole place.)
We didn't spray paint it, or simply tip it over, we threw rocks at them. As I saw my brother doing it, I thought that it was okay.
As a child, I had not seen this as vandalism, but as an activity to pass the time.
The police got involved when the land lord noticed his beautiful deer statues smashed to pieces.
My father had to pay six hundred dollars out of pocket. This was vacation money.
After a quick talk with the police officer (I don't remember the conversation), my dad told us to go home to await punishment.
Now you see, me and my brother had counteractive measures that we would take when we knew that we were going to get the belt. Me and my brother padded our asses with newspaper and awaited in paranoia.
We got our lashing from the belt, and even with the newspaper, it hurt.
From that point on, the land lord would always stare me down when I was up and walking around.
Fun Fact: About six months later, the whole area caught fire and all of the log cabins burned down.
That's my story.

You're right. There's a multitude of other things that make you bland as well.
