I couldn't just kill randoms. They would've had to have done something to me

As others have said, impersonal is more for fame and/or mental distress.
It's basically not getting personal with the victim. No rape, no torture, no looking into the eyes of the victim as you kill him/her, no long-term stalking beforehand. Quick and easy, maybe at a distance, and no hanging around with the body.

If I ever became that deranged I'd be a Raymond Reddington type. Killing those who crossed me or their continued living was a threat to my freedom/profit. I understand this probably wouldn't work long term but it's the only way I could really see myself killing anyone.

I would never kill people either. I'd feel very guilty and be empathetic.

^Read tons about this guy, his self auto bio even. He had a hard and very unfair life at a pretty young age but he was the type to shoot up the post office for being late with his mail...every time.

Have you read Charles Manson's autobiography (specifically the autobiography, not the Gunn one)?
I find the tone really interesting - he had a rough life too, but the thing that interests me about it is the way he describes his own actions. He never tries to make excuses for what happened, he doesn't apologise and he doesn't justify it - but at the same time it's not like he's avoiding responsibility either. It's strange and cold, literally feels like 'bad things happen - the book'.
