SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) - The student body president at Texas State University is calling for the author of an editorial condemned by campus leaders as "racist" to step down from the student newspaper, along with the opinions editor and editor-in-chief of the "University Star."
"These individuals knowingly allowed divisive, racist material to stain the reputation of this great University," Student Body President Connor Clegg said.
If the individuals choose not to resign, Clegg says he will call an emergency meeting and defund the school's newspaper. "If the Star wishes to maintain its operations without student funding, they can do so like any other paper - by earning subscribers and selling more advertisements. There is no reason for over 39,000 students to be forced to invest their student fees towards this brand of journalism," Clegg said.
Thursday evening The University Star released a letter from the editorial board. "We screwed up," the letter said. "The author of the column has jeopardized the atmosphere of inclusivity at the university and will no longer be published in The University Star." -

If somebody wrote the same thing about another race/ethnic group it would be unacceptable
Either it's open season on everybody or nobody

So what part of threatening to defund a student organization for publishing a controversial article qualifies as free speech then? -

They never said they couldn’t have free speech. They just said they didn’t want to fund that kind of speech, which is their choice. If the speech doesn’t align with the university’s values, why should they fund it?
Same with all the news organizations that are owned by corporations. You think they have free speech? Try saying something that makes those corporations look bad and see what happens.
When you’re owned or funded by something or someone, you have to do what they say. That’s just how it works. -
2017-12-02 at 3:35 PM UTCIt's more of a freedom of association thing than a freedom of speech one. They're free to keep saying the things they said, they're just not free to associate themselves with a university that doesn't wish to be.
