I have many times. But it doesn't seem to work with everything. The second best thing for you to do, to avoid malware, would be to set up an old phone with a Google Play account, install the app onto it from the Google Play store, then extract the APK using the app below, then move the APK to your primary phone and install it.

I use APK extractor all the time.
thats how i did it when i used to have secondary phones but the battery broke and leaked slimey juice all over the phone.
anyway i'm using the very old version of es files explorer which didnt come with intrusive ads and its got all the essential tools built in ... including tools to make a copy of your currently installed apps and make it sendable over bluetooth or lan. -
