You can almost always get from not-dead or half-dead to dead pretty quick if it's something other than being dead that scares you.
Realistically I'll never qualify for a liver transplant, I would probably pass on one if dying of cirrhosis too since the transplant apparatus in the US is one of the few which admits to a ostensibly utilitarian approach to distribution of resources (organs) and it's pretty unlikely that the next guy in line needs it any less than I do. -

i've always wanted to wear tactical combatt boots so when i finally got a pair i finally understand why people dont wear them on a daily basis.
its easy to say you'd do so and so at so and so condition without being there, so i guess its something we'd never know.

True, I'm fully willing to admit my attitudes in evidence of my imminent demise could be very different than they are now, that very different pressures affect one's psyche on death's door than in relative health. But if not on the opinions I hold now what on earth could I propose to base my decisions? It's fine to say we have a limited perspective here and now but that tells us nothing about what a correct perspective is. All anyone could hope to do is to be true to what they believe now in hopes that when their opinions inevitably change they will at least not have to regret their failure to be true to themselves.
