There is no surer sign of vanity than concern for one's longevity. Only in those so unsure of why they continue their lives, so absolutely frightened of reaching their conclusions without having figured out how to start, does the fear of eventual death take root. Like any person the prospect of imminent death frightens me, when I see a car hurtling towards me I try to avoid it. But when confronted with prospect of my eventual demise, the knowledge that no survival strategy will carry me more than another 80 some years, at very best, I'm scarcely concerned. Cirrhosis at 50 or heart attack at 80, why would any sane person care? In the vanishing instant that is a human lifespan if what you want to do with your life takes more time and requires N more years than death from alcoholism affords then your plan is dogshit, you won't accomplish whatever you'd deluded yourself into wanting, and you might as well kill yourself right now.

He's saying you could get killed by a mass murderer just as easily as drinking yourself to death, which, again, is not true. The odds of you offing yourself from alcohol are immensely greater than the odds of Ted Bundy latching onto your shoulder in a dark parking lot.

But you left out the part that your life is not only your own, as it is shared by others around you. It's not really all about you.

Weak. How hopeless do you need to be that you have to justify your continued existence in terms of the fostered dependence of others upon you? You don't live the way you want because you're so great others would be harmed by your absence? Pfft. Lot's of things aren't all about me, but the question as to whether I continue breathing is. Anyone who surrenders the justification for their own existence to something outside of themselves is tragically lacking in self-confidence of the most foundational kind.

If it's better to give then give because it's better, not because of a constructed sense of self worth used to justify getting up in the morning.

You can't give anything, if you're dead.
