    Smoking probably started from the practice of burning/cooking/experimenting with herbs. Maybe they liked the smell or taste or something and then realized how dank ass purp skurp it was when burnt in quantities.

    I bet it was something like Native Americans burning a pile of it and noticing they got "high" or whatever their term for it was when it was burnt..putting two and two together they fashioned a pipe out of wood for more controlled inhalation.
