As well as implying American football consists of hurling a ball in a high arc as far as you can, which would be Hail Mary, called such because it's a prayer and acknowledged as skill-less. The rest of throwing, as 2001 said, into traffic, moving targets, while being chased down, is a bit more of a skill.
The Hail Mary of course is used generally at the end of games when you've got nothing to lose and need to score with little to no time left. -
