Dissected Fram 'ExtraGuard', Fram 'ToughGuard', and Bosch 'Premium' Oil enhancements
-
2017-08-17 at 1:22 AM UTCInternal components of dissected Fram 'ExtraGuard', Fram 'ToughGuard', and Bosch 'Premium' oil enhancements
The biggest difference in the two Fram enhancements appeared to be the 'ToughGuard' having a tighter pleating of the enhancement media.
The cheapest was the 'Fram ExtraGuard'...which was the lowest priced enhancement available in that size...with the Bosch being almost twice as expensive as the Fram. The Fram 'ToughGuard' was a couple of dollars more than the 'ExtraGuard.'
In the future Im planning on trying the Motorcraft enhancement if the auto parts store can manage to order it properly, as well as the Mobil 1 offering. The K&N enhancement looks nice and from outwards appearances seems well made but for the price they want, the cost/benefit ratio leans too far towards 'cost.'

not that much...they get changed every 2,000 miles or so. the oldest one (the orange Fram with the enhancement media torn open) is about a year old...meaning it sat in my shed in a box for about that long waiting to be dissected. its also black and hides the greasy/oily hand prints better than the lighter colored Frams.
The color is one thing I like about my truck enhancements...theyre white and I keep them clean so it looks more antiseptic. -

flow rate and filtration efficiency matters. -

if its only black, its just carbons. carbons are not good, but theyre not really bad either.
not only that but the various combustion-by-products other than the assorted carbons shit-up the oil, making it opaque.
additionally...all of the shit in the oil has the effect of damaging, removing, or altering, the various ingredients of the oil...adversely affecting its ability to protect lubricated engine parts.
the way they have EGR bullshit in modern vehicles that nastiness eventually accumulates and turns various parts of the engine into a sludge fest. i learned this lesson on my first long-term car. since adopting the 'change oil when it gets dirty' policy, i havent had the problem since. -

true but idk ... the effects of that on actual, realife everyday car doing their everyday thing are hardly noticeable.
unless your racing or doing some other performance critical activities with your vehicle which i cant think of.the way they have EGR bullshit in modern vehicles that nastiness eventually accumulates and turns various parts of the engine into a sludge fest. i learned this lesson on my first long-term car. since adopting the 'change oil when it gets dirty' policy, i havent had the problem since.
EGR was a hightech contraption from more than 30years ago, i'm not sure they are still a staple of modern cars but i remember i stop seeing that pipe that came out from the exhaust manifold into the carb when they begin injecting fuels.
