The homeless do it obviously but their transportation and thus access to good spots and good recycling centers is limited. If you located a bunch spots where a lot of cans are discarded, such as a university frat house party street, you could possibly make it worthwhile and not have to fuck with digging through trash. Just drive around to hit up all the spots on friday and saturday mornings and then bring that shit in and get your check. How much money do you think i can make?

I helped a friend haul in what amounted to an entire car sized trailer of assorted metal junk and it was barely over 200. Scrap prices are way too low what I would do is be diligent in keeping up with aluminum scrap prices while amassing a TONNE of cans the closer you can get to that being literal the better off you'll be but I wouldn't even attempt to cash them in anytime soon.

At about 6 or 7 cents a can, it would take you about 16 cans to make a dollar. 1600 cans to make $100.

i do this
i wash out all my cans with hot water and crush them so when i throw them in a bag by the rest of all my scrap i dont have to worry about attracting roaches
i have a pretty small amount right now, but i also keep copper and brass scrap. mostly just insulated wire since its usually not worth stripping it as well as brass fittings if i somehow acquire them. i pretty much treat it like a change jar but since im far enough away from a scrap yard that it isnt worth taking small amounts im just gonna stockpile it until i have alot/NEED the money

when i was a little kid living in NYC there was a deposit on all bottles and cans of like 5-cents or 10-cents. we would collect what cans/bottles we could from the trash...then go hang out at certain bars and restaurants to grab the stock-piled recyclables behind their fences.
i posted a story one time about an incident where a slight bit of fisticuffs resulted between myself/friends and a homeless fuck who claimed the restaurant we were raiding was 'his.'
that bitch's house and junk was literally thrown into the river.
