It's not a lot of money, enough for food, rent, whatever. Enough to raise a family by basically going to church and doing bible study every day. The school of Trianglism could easily do the same thing and offer to pay scholars for religious research.
a lot of them are young dudes that otherwise would be incels or work some dead end job but instead they basically get to chill and be thinkers in a modern technological world and if you can make money on the side or do extra work that sounds way more fulfilling a church life in the holy land getting paid to read the bible, Sign me up!
