israel is operating at a much higher intensity with both the assassinations and the restart of the 'Dahiyeh Doctrine' (ie. targeting civilians and infrastructure in order to put political pressure on Hezbullah), but Hezbullah has been hesitant to escalate beyond the artillery rocket salvos they've been using since October last year. They've started using longer-range rockets which puts most of the north of israel within range and have been targeting airbases and anti-air infrastructure, but these are still relatively cheap and inaccurate rockets that are doing limited damage (which is further hard to guage thanks to the israeli media blackout).

On the macro level, Hezbullah can only win by drawing the IDF into their own territory and defeating them, the humiliation of which is likely to collapse the israeli state. this is more or less guaranteed by Netenyahu's promise to 'return residents to the North' as it'll be impossible for israel to stop the constant rocket barrages without a major ground operation that pushes Hezbullah out of firing range. Hez cannot win by marching into the Galilee.

At this point I would've expected Hez to start using their more modern missiles (everything they've used so far has been available to them before the 2006 war) in order to degrade israeli military capability given that in the defensive war they WANT to fight, the effectiveness of standoff weapons will be minimised due to Hez favouring close combat and heavy cover in order to neutralise the IDF's advantages as much as possible.

It's possible they're wary of escalating at all given that it could start a chain that ends with direct US involvement or the Samsung Option, but allowing israel to operate at the level it does without a direct response begins to cause problems with morale and support within the 'resistance' umbrella, which I've been seeing a bit of (as well as obvious j*ws taking advantage of the situation to claim that Hez and Iran are impotent and not doing enough).

Been thinking about this, the other day the new Secretary General of Hezbullah said something along the lines of 'First it was Metulla, then Haifa became Metulla, and tomorrow it will be Tel Aviv' and it started to make more sense.

The goal with the artillery rocket barrages has been two-fold - first to make the targeted region unsafe, forcing shutdowns and evacuations, and second to force the IDF to bring their anti-missile systems north to engage the threat and to wear down supplies. Inaccurate KATYUSHAs actually making it through the IRON DOME's umbrella were unlikely to do any real damage given the sparse countryside (ATGMs are a different story entirely).

The initial region targeted was the very north of israel, being closest to Lebanon they were able to strike at it with the cheapest rockets and the sparsely populated towns and farms were easier to evacuate than an urban centre. The societal and economic pressure of having over 100,000 people displaced and not working is likely more effective than any target they could've destroyed.

As they move on to more expensive rockets (specifically the FADI-1 and FADI-2, which are also simple artillery rockets with an extended range) they operate with the same goals, and due to destruction of several IRON DOME batteries and depletion of its munitions are more successful. Rocket fire on Haifa and its surroundings makes it unsafe to operate as normal; people spend hours a day in missile shelters and schools and amenities are shut down unless they're within 2 minutes walk from a shelter. RAFAEL and other weapons manufacturers fall inside this zone and several have had their facilities damaged, though it's not clear to what extent given IDF gag orders.

The goal is to create a gradually-expanding zone in israel where 'normal life' is not possible, ostensibly to paralyze israel's ability to fight a (multi-front) war. It seems that Hezbullah is confident enough in fighting on the ground in South Lebanon that they haven't needed to escalate further, aside from stepping up the rocket artillery on the Haifa area and several targeted drone/missile strikes on IDF facilities.

its more of a necessity than a strategy.

the hezzys have very limited logistics to move missiles and rockets stealthily with US spying asssets all over them.

what kind of asscalation do you think the hezzys are going to do if they choose to asscalate.

like I was saying in the first post, I would've expected them to massively step up launches against staging areas and supply lines in the north in order to blunt any offensive into Lebanon, but they didn't

Didn't we come to this conclusion like a week ago when talking about why Haifa was being targeted?

sure but I mean specifically why they're just slowly increasing the area under attack rather than using missiles in whatever way to react directly to the ground assault

I don't have the original Haaretz article because apparently you have to pay for it, but even the leftist israelis are now admitting the Hannibal Directive was real and the IDF directly targeted hostages.

it's also worth noting that this is the first time I've seen mainstream media refer to the October 7 attack without calling it an 'unprovoked terrorist attack' or blaming Kkkhamas for all casualties.

    HANNIBAL SECOND TIME AROUND

It was 9:45 a.m. and Noam Schneider was only about 100 meters from the two burned-our Hummers when he saw the smoke, two large columns of fire ris- ing to the skies on the road leading down the slope, crossing the waif (valley) at the spot known over the field radio as 105 phase line. It took Schneider only a couple of minutes to understand that he and his men were too late. A count of the dead and wounded in and around the Hummers revealed that the parol wasewo soldiers short. Herbollah were nowhere to be seen. In the 45 minutes berween the strack and the arrival of the first reinforcements, the abductors had had more than enough time to mak a safe gewway from the Israeli side of the border and hack ineo Lebanese veffitory. Hezbollah had carried our ins plan perfecily: an effective attack on the patrol moving along the security fence that runs parallel to the border, a simultaneous decoy operation, consisting of heavy shelling along the border and a decommissioning of all the observation cameras that were set up near the border. Together, all these actions crested the commotion necessary to provide time for a successful abduction. Schneider, the officer in charge of reserve battalion support com- pany, looked helplessly at his commander, Lieutenant Colonel Benny Azran. All the officers in 91st Division, enerusted with guarding the Israel-Lebanon border, were told the same thing, either before taking up their positions or during their stine of reserve dury: Anything you don't get done during the first few moments after the enemy has conducted a successful abduction, you'll never get done. Nest to the cut in the security fence, they found a blood- stained flak jacket belonging to one of the abducted soldiers. Nimer, 91st Division's scout, warned that the hole in the fence might be booby-trapped. There were eight officers and soldiers on the scene, clearly not a force capa ble of conducting a chase into Lebanon. At that point, Azran and Schneider decided that it would be no use trying to pursue the captured Israeli soldiers. From that moment on, it was a mater for the ranks above theirs.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) slang has a term to describe the mood prevalent among the reservise soldiers in the Zar'ir section the area of the abduction on the morning of July 12, 2006: they call i "end-of-serm feel- ing. "There is not a reservist in the IDF who doesn't know this feeling: On the

last day of term after three and a half weeks of exhausting scrivity along the

border, the main, if not only, topic of conversation during those final hours is

the length of time it will take to get home. If the replacemene batalion turns
