2024-09-22 at 10:33 AM UTCPagers etc..Some explosives dont release any detectable odor but they can also be encased in parafín wax to prevent any odor being released. Probably something like RDX in wax and lead azide or silver acetylide.
This was apparently being planned for over 15 years. And those explosives have unlimited shelf life.
Theres a lot of room inside electronics, also. But its clear they didnt need to do a lot of physical damage since the paranoia of thinking any of their electronics may be rigged to explode should do plenty of psychological damage.
It would actually make sense to do this to millions of smart phones so at any point in time they can be detonated against a persons head, killing them instantly. A secondary charge wouldnt even really be necessary.
If each device has its own unique detonation sequence / transmission, buometrics with radio fingerprinting could make the attack fairly selective. Connect hezbollah biometrics with the unique radio fingerprints and you can selectively put the hezbollah fighters out of commission while minimizing collateral damage.
Clever. -

investigation teams seem to think it was PETN, maybe stabilised in a special way.
goal wasn't necessarily to be lethal but to disable soldiers, throw communications into chaos and overload the medical system in preparation for a major war. they used similar tricks in the nakhba purges in the 40s and 50s. -

What do you mean stabilised? PETN is related to ETN although somewhat more sensitve to shock and friction if I recall correctly, but neither are considered primary explosives on their own, thats why PETN is used in exploding bridge wire detonators or EBWs.
The cookoff or thermal decomposition to detonation theory is plauisble but this is a military that has access to primary explosives even more powerful than silver acetylide which can reliably detonate PETN in amounts the size of a match head...
Also, ETN doesnt reliably cookoff to detonation without something like aluminum strips embedded as a catalyst and even then it isnt 100% reliable. I assume PETN is similar in that regard.
Why not just use a match head size amount of primary?
15 years of planning definitely means they couldve easily made their own duplicates of the normal pagers and switched the normal ones out. This is a modern military with access to the best everything.
The pager needs to only divert charge to a primary when a specific signal is received, and this can easily use the pagers normal battery power. Nothing overly complex even if they were modified rather than doing a switcharoo.
Also Israel has the same drone and satellite based tracking tech as the US so they can easily know if its a hezbollah fighter holding a rigged device.
An app that the US Army helped develop, Twosense AI can uniquely identify people through walls and roofs when installed on any phone or laptop, although its nowhere near the most advanced biometric tech they have, thats why its now in the civilian market.
Hezbolla didnt do logistics well so they got hoodwinked real hard. -

who knows, that's just the best information available at the moment

people are speculating that the pagers themselves had their firmware patched; it's possible but unlikely given that battery packs started exploding in all sorts of other devices two days later. there's currently no public evidence that the pagers themselves were directly modified.
it makes sense that the battery packs were where the explosives were deposited with that in mind, also that the majority of photos of destroyed devices show a rupture in the battery area, and that the radios (with significantly larger battery packs) were statistically more lethal and had larger explosions captured on video. -

aldra is cool too but he has to push the 'zomg leet battery hax wiff no primary explosivez needed' narrative for his JIDF handlers. Probably plays Watchdogs a bit too much.
I dont even qualify as an armchair analyst, just your average explosives enthusiast. You guys are way cooler than me even if your knowledge of these matters is rather limited -

2024-09-23 at 1:14 AM UTCNo explosive material is required. The voltage on the device is 220V. If the voltage to the ions in the battery is suddenly increased to triple the normal 4.18V, the battery WILL explode. Not a slow burn either. It will explode.

No matter how you slice it you mathed that horribly.
If you meant the normal voltage is 2.20V (properly expressed as 2.2V) the triple that woukd be 6.6V.
If you really meant to say a pager runs on 220V you're a moron and your math really sucks. 4.18V is neither and increase over 220V nor is it any where near triple 220V.

2024-09-23 at 1:27 AM UTCCharging any lithium battery above 4.2V per cell is a very dangerous idea and they will explode.

that's a bit ironic given your extreme overestimation of the US/israel's ability to translate theoretical signals intelligence into actual results -

try it, tell me how it goes for you.
further - the lithium cell is the only battery in most of those devices, where are you getting 2-3x the wattage from in order to overload the battery? -
