If cults are/were real, perhaps the techniques used are on a spectrum, and perhaps there are varying degrees of control and manipulation going on in the real world too.
it's not magic or some kind of special power and giving it that kind of mystique just takes agency away from people.
if you're able to control the information a person receives and understand how they process it, yeah, you're able to manipulate the way they think and their outcomes.
to equate that level of direct manipulation with people you don't like, ie. 'brainwashed leftists', 'brainwashed trump supporters' is just a way to denigrate and delegitimise the way they've come to the positions they have in the same way that referring to demographics as 'apes' or 'cockroaches' has historically been a way to dehumanise them. it's the first step in justifying more and more punitive action against people you don't like. -

I wrote plenty about them; you should go read that instead of asking silly questions -

2024-06-02 at 6:16 PM UTCThis cult eats dead people because they believe it will give them enlightenment. Something they and Aldra have in common is their willingness to perform unscientifically proven and dangerous procedures in search of enlightenment.

2024-06-02 at 6:37 PM UTCI am not brainwashed nor can I be. I can sniff out fucking bullshit. I am too anti-government, anti-religion, anti-tradition to ever be swooned by their hopes and dreams they promise you.
I do agree that some people are more prone to being brainwashed than others, namely, the elderly. Especially elderly women. Elderly white women, to be precise. They seem to be the most gullible and will literally allow you to spoon-feed them anything you want as long as it "sounds" reasonable or plays upon things they're dealing with in life at their age.
Anyone who is a DIE-HARD supporter of their religion, political party, etc is absolutely brainwashed. When someone even ATTEMPTS to brainwash me, my body and mind REJECT IT and I become agitated and ultimately full blown pissed. My anger at the bullshit you're touting is how I know you're trying to brainwash me and in the words of my very wise wife, "YOU CAN'T BRAINWASH ME, MOTHERFUCKERS!" -

Who said this is magical?

Do you believe cult leaders really understand what they are doing to people, and how it is working? Or are they just people who naturally possess certain talents and basically "lucked out" with a susceptible audience? Perhaps there's a bit of a spectrum. Surely there have been people who noticed this phenomenon, studied it, and have worked towards practicing it.
Have you ever been brainwashed? Would you even know it? Do people who are in cults always know they are in cults?

Do you believe it's always only the "people you don't like" are the ones who are in cults, or cult-like structures? I mean, if the cult was actually effective enough, you would really like the people in it would you. Might even see those people as colleagues or mentors. Do you believe you would figure it out on your own? -

Were you always this way, or did you have to learn to adapt? -
2024-06-02 at 7:01 PM UTCbrainwashing is a very specific state where people are unable to think for themselves and will refuse to eat until the point of starvation until someone says they are 'allowed' to eat i.e hardcore cults like scientology.
Brainwashing is not people that disagree with you politically. -

I'm talking about this sort of thing:
But since you've brought it up, I could imagine manipulation techniques could be used for political purposes. Doesn't seem outside the realm of possibilities. -

It is. I say people are "brainwashed by society" but I really mean parroting a narrative or not thinking about issues critically. I have always been fascinated by cults so I read a lot of books about it at a young age and what a lot of people call "brainwashing" or "cults" doesn't really meet the definition at all.
Aum Shinrikyo was a cult. They killed people because they were ordered to. The difference between something like ISIS or a mass shooting by a right/left skitzo is that they are committing those actions of their own free will, they might be radicalized by something but I wouldn't call them brainwashed by an ideology it's just the wrong term to use. -

So from your perspective, someone who has been brainwashed has no freewill?
How does that happen? Can the brainwashed person do anything to get their freewill back again? How do you verify someone has lost their freewill, and isn't just parroting a narrative? -

I mostly agree, but it has its exceptions.
Take Donald Trump for example. He was never a politician. He wasn't always a celebrity. He was the son of a well to do business man in New York that inherited that empire and ran with it.
For the entirety of his "career" he appeared in things like WWF, Home Alone, etc. He starred on his own reality TV show for awhile.
People forget that during the 80s and 90s he himself said he was a "Democrat".
It was only during the 2016 election he claimed he was a Republican "only to try and beat Hillary"
Either way, whatever the motives are, the cult following around him is massive. He cannot do ANY WRONG in the eyes of his supporters. Any wrong lobbied at him simply CANNOT be true. They cannot imagine a scenario where he did actual wrong. It's impossible.
This is probably one of the biggest cults worldwide as he somehow franchises foreigners too.
Politics and religion are the biggest carriers for brainwash material.
