Why are so few animals in the wild overweight?

    Unlike humans obesity in the animal kingdom is relatively rare. Yes of course we all know pigs and bears gravitate towards heavy/high fat body masses. But in general birds, fish, every animal that doesn't hibernate/isn't preparing for hibernation is rarely fat. Only when domesticated by humans do they tend to grow fat.

    I understand part of it is fat people overfeed their animals. But in the wild many animals have the opportunity to overeat but choose not to. Why is that?

    I've never seen a turtle with a beer belly or a bird with breasts for instance.
