metals in general hold value because gold, silver etc. are required for modern manufacture and need to be mined, so scarcity makes value predictable.
in a situation where everything falls apart they have no practical value so outside of a common unit of trade, or if you're just waiting until they're useful again, you're better off stockpiling something more practical -

you just literally described the market for diamonds. as in...there is a virtually unlimited supply of it but the jews inhibit its extraction then extensively control its distribution and warehousing to keep the market prices of what is essentially a really hard rock unnaturally high.
gold isnt scarce. yes, there is a low comparative concentration of gold available for easy mining compared to something like copper or aluminum, but every day the supply of gold increases and value will decrease.
platinum may (or may not) be a lower composition of the planets surface however its prices fluctuate exponentially based on laws made on its use. an example of artificial price manipulation
its all fun and games till they find a Ceres-sized asteroid made out of some precious metal.
gold isnt a proper means of exchange and using it as such is a mistake. -
