In reality he was hungry and wanted something.
At the time if someone came to the house they'd give them tea and food 100% of the time. If they said no they'd insist, on and on. Even the postman wasn't safe from being force fed.
Now we're more or less the same way in Ireland as they used to be in England, if you come here you're fairly generally unlikely to be fed, unless it's meal time and you've been for a while. Which is sad.
In the place of hospitality junk food has taken over. -
