If you're in an illegal or medical-only state, chances are you get your weed from a "plug" AKA someone that sells you drugs. There are a few ways to get a plug, here are 3.
1 - DNM's, AKA dark net markets: These are a fantastic way to purchase not only weed, but a variety of other substances as well. I once got 2 OZ of some mid for 100$ on a DNM. Most vendors ship their products discretely and safely as long as you aren't buying a QP every week or selling what you buy, you will be fine. On another note, most DNM weed is at least OK, if not 7-8/10. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for though.
2 - Telegram/Kik groups: Most of these are chalk full of scammers, but if you can find a legit plug on here, they usually have a menu that you can look at so you always know what they are selling.
3 - Friends/Coworkers: This is probably your best bet, depending on the person you ask. You can find out whether a plug's products are good or not from your friend/coworker as well, depends on how well you know them and whether you trust them or not.

It was easy when I still lived in the city, I'd just ask random people that looked like they either smoked or sold and they usually won't rip you off if you just buy a dime bag or something.
Totally different with boy and crack though, if you don't know them they will probably fleece you.
I guess it depends on where you're at, if it's a small town or something the ask friends method was what I always did.

depends on how social you are
I wouldn't try the ask strangers route
if you have any friends at all they'll usually know someone, but if you ask the wrong person who you work with or knows your family etc you might just fuck yourself
with telegram/kik etc it's really not much different from asking strangers except you can't fight them if they try to rip you off
tor markets are the most reliable nowadays but you'll pay more
