There's an 86-percent chance that a quake stronger than last year's deadly Northridge temblor will strike a fault in Southern California within 30 years.
Scientists said Friday that estimates made in 1988 projected up to a 60-percent chance of a magnitude-7 quake, but only in areas affected by two major faults _ the San Andreas and San Jacinto.
"Since then, there's been a tremendous amount of new information," said David Schwartz, a U.S. Geological Survey geologist.
The Northridge earthquake, 6.7 on the Richter Scale, killed 61 people in January 1994. This week's earthquake in Kobe, Japan, that killed more than 4,000 people was estimated at a magnitude of 6.9 to 7.2.
Using mathematical models, scientists predict six quakes of at least magnitude-7 every 100 years in Southern California. But the region has only had four and as a result, scientists believe another one is highly likely by 2024. -

2024-01-14 at 10:48 AM UTCWhen you consider how expensive everything is and how poorly equipped the yanks are with coping and constructions skills to rebuild it seems to me that one decent earthquake taking out enough of South California could end the American empire.

yea but if you look at gdp (yes aldra, i know) cali contribute the most in non tangible product such as intellectual properties that will continue to flow with or without physical presence in cali.
the rest are just farm lands.
only places with manufacturing sectors that require physical factory spaces will be effected by earthquakes. cali is also the place with the highest work from home percapita during the covid "pandemic" -
2024-01-14 at 6:01 PM UTCThe entire peninsula could slide right into the ocean, down thousands of feet, 163,696 square miles, 40 million people. Could happen at any time.
