I think you would instinctively run, but shells are not detonated by a timer IIRC. Like a bomb they assplode by means of a pressure trigger. -

Not true. Most if not all artillery is rifled. The numbers I fed fire control from our surveys were translated to simple shit the gun bunnys could grasp. They set each round set each round to explode after X number of revolutions. A standard anti-personnel round should ideally detonate about 100 meters above the target. This sends shrapnel in a cone that pretty much kills or wounds anything in a 100 meters diameter. The sheets used against armored targets are guided by infrared, laser, millimeter wave radar, or some combination thereof and have some type of hardened penetrator "submunition". Now the Dprk might sport some ancient contact detonation munitions. But that type of shell is not nearly as effective even as anti-personnel as the terrain as orbs much of the destructive potential. -

Sounds like a pain in the dick to have to calculate the revolutions and distance and all that jazz for the shell to go off when it should. -

Its all done by satellite now as far as the survey info. My job, 82C10 was eliminated in the late 90's I think. On any event it's not as complicated as it might sound. There was a dummy sheet you popped the instrument readings into, referenced a logrhythm book for cosign functions BS, did some simple +-*/ math, called a number to fire control, they told the bunnys how many clicks on each round, depending on where support was needed, and kaboom. It all happened in a matter of minutes.
One of the cooler things we could do as surveyors was a sun altitude survey. It involved a T2 Theodolite and a sun enhancement for the lens. You setup and balanced your instrument, took a reading on the sun and then broke down the instrument and repeated the process twice more. If you did this within 15 minutes you could identify your exact location on earth down the the second of longitude and latitude. -

That's pretty awesome. Although from footage i ahve seen a fire mission seems rather boring. But, if you are going to be in the military, having a big ass gun a couple miles away from the actual battlefield seems like a pretty cozy position to be in. Unless you get like bombed or some shit. -

The gun bunnys could be over 30 miles from the target. The survey team had to do 3 surveys. A gun emplacement survey, an acquisition area survey, and a target area survey (behind enemy lines). So yeah like an FO but with bright flags and guys yelling numbers and dragging rods, chains, and instruments. Our combat life expectancy was the same as a door gunner in a huey, 7 seconds. -

Yes, but it's not like we were walking around enemy positions taking readings. A target area survey is like a recon patrol with survey instruments. But we were doing recon on the topography of a general area as large as 25 square miles or more. The idea was to know the "lay of the land" so that as a battle flowed and the enemy moved his position was sort of pre targeted eliminating the need for forward observers in the heat of battle. Any unit that needed support fire could use our map info to call in support for itself.
