meta for melee doesn't matter too much because if you're able to isolate zombies and 1v1 them it's just about timing stuns so a bone knife is good and punching will do the job, just slower
if you get rushed by a group you need a gun, melee's not going to do it

Sand is pretty abundant, even outside the desert, so I think you just need to get a furnace together and you should have all the jars you need

I've set up on the bakery roof north of the closest trader to spawn, grab supplies from there
for blood moon I usually just find a strong building and kick out the ladder/stairs and rain down on them until I get a proper base set up
