    it was a big thing in Vietnam, the new M16s the US had just started deploying were more accurate at longer ranges, but they didn't take into account how humid and dirty the jungles are so they failed a lot more than the AKs the NV were using

    That is an urban myth. The truth is this. The first revision of the M16A1 was shipped with barrels that were not chrome lined to cheap out. Once they realized the issue with this in the jungles of southeast Asia they plunked down the extra change and the problem was quickly remedied.
