On net.
Doing something wrong, like killing someone, is bad. Sometimes, you need to kill someone. On net it is the right thing to do. Even if people won't understand. Killing your dad when he drunkenly beats the shit out of your mom every night really takes the evil out of patricide. Doing something "bad" doesn't mean what you're doing is necessarily "wrong" - if the world offers no perfectly moral solutions, you are doing what is right. Hitler was misguided. -

The slaughtered civilians many of whom were children were not doing anything wrong
If you think Hitler wasn't aware of right or wrong then your 2 brain cells are malfunctioning. -

As I said, misguided. I'm not saying what Hitler did was correct, I'm saying Hitler was likely convinced what he was doing was correct. "A necessary evil for the greater good." Like murder in self-defense. -

Wrong and "wrong" is where I think the breakdown is occurring here. You don't have to be mentally ill to believe the ends justify the means, nor do you have to believe you're evil or in the wrong to adhere to that philosophy. Quite the opposite: the ends justify the means. ie "what I am doing is bad, but necessary, and on net will create a better future than not doing it". Misguided. -

Claiming what you are doing is right...doesn't mean inside you know it's wrong. -
2023-09-07 at 1 PM UTCUsing your logic Billy Mitchell was doing right...he was just promoting himself and twin galaxies with a view to personal gain...and so no worse than Hitler.

2023-09-07 at 1:02 PM UTCie "I have do something people will think is 'wrong' because they lack my foresight to see that it is 'right'."
"Trading the lives of 6 million jedis for those of 60 million Germans" vs "I'm killing the jedis because they don't like my paintings" are very different concepts, and it's easy to convince yourself you're the good guy when it comes to the former. -

"The interesting thing about evil is, the people who commit it do not often think of it as evil. Other people think of it as evil. Ceausescu and PolPot and Mao Tse-Dong and Hitler and Stalin: they are responsible in the last century for killing millions and millions of people, but they did not think that they were doing evil."

"If Dualism is true then the Bad Power must be a being who likes badness for its own sake. But in reality we have no experience of anyone liking badness just because it is bad. The nearest we can get to it is in cruelty. But in real life people are cruel for one of two reasons - either because they are sadists, that is, because they have a sexual perversion which makes cruelty a cause of sensual pleasure to them, or else for the sake of something they are going to get out of it - money, or power, or safety. But pleasure, money, power and safety are all, as far as they go, good things. The badness consists in pursuing them by the wrong method, or in the wrong way, or too much. i do not mean, of course, that the people who do this are not desperately wicked. I do mean that wickedness, when you examine it, turns out to be the pursuit of some good in the wrong way. You can be good for the mere sake of goodness : you cannot be bad for the mere sake of badness."
