on Bakhmut in particular
if forces are evenly matched, the attacker normally takes 3-5x the casualties that the defender does when attempting to take a fortification. after WWI/WWII though it became apparent that artillery and other standoff weapons dramatically changed that - in modern warfare, artillery is responsible for roughly 75% of battlefield casualties, so superiority in that field changes everything, not to mention C4ISR.
at its peak Wagner had around 40,000 men, the majority fighting in Bakhmut at the time (there was some degree of support from the standard Russian military but it's not clear how much because Prigozhin specifically wanted to frame it as a Wagner victory). the AFU officially cycled around 120,000 men through (not including paramilitaries, volunteer battalions, foreign mercs etc.) and was still unable to hold the city, so it's probably safe to say that KIAs were catastrophic -

All sorts of shit has come out of storage, and Ukraine's "allies" are only giving them old and broken shite, and mocking them when they ask for anything beside junk and cast offs.

so in any artillery duel both side will be decimated;
russia will be decimate in the proper sense of the word, that is losing 1/10th of its strength,
ukrainians will be decimated according to the improper sense of the word, that is fucked beyond repair and salvage.
