the real value it had was through its partnerships and the ability to push certain narratives and suppress others, specifically through creating echo chambers this way (see: sharing massive blocklists, hidden mechanisms for increasing or reducing engagement etc.), creatively redefining things like hate speech and protected groups, intentionally vague and constantly changing rules etc.
even if musk were truthfully pursuing 'free speech' (he's not, he has his own caveats he wants to preserve) it doesn't prevent the same systems from springing up elsewhere, it just slows the process down by interfering with the current biggest platform. Reddit is arguably worse and more effective from that standpoint, it just targets people who have a slightly longer attention span. -
