what about this video is convincing to you? what evidence does it provide? do you have any individual thoughts of your own?
I'd support the 'defunding' or drawing down of the police if it was coupled with greater legal protections for defending yourself, others or property, but in practice all this does is prevent the police from combating crime while providing no alternative.
the effect is to essentially allow crime to occur and to use state funds (ie. the citizens' funds) to clean up afterwards in order to prevent any violent confrontation. you get compound robbed; you lose the goods to a thief, then your insurance premiums get boosted because robberies are up, then your taxes go up.
the people committing the crimes, though, do not feel the effects whatsoever - the don't pay taxes, don't get pursued and if for some reason they get caught, they either get charges dropped on compassionate grounds or just don't go to court. I guess less black 'kids' get shot for waving guns at cops when they get caught though. -

I don't like cops, but I do recognize that bad people exist and generally, I'm not a mistake theorist. There are violent criminals who aren't going down without bullets - they aren't making a mistake or just having a bad day, they are knowingly doing fucked up shit because it's what makes them happy. So there need to be people ready to deliver those bullets where they're needed most. I don't think you're going to psychiatry your way out of nearly as many violent situations as the police defunding brigade thinks would be possible. And even if you can psychiatry like 60% - or fuck it, even 99.99% - of current police calls, "defund the police" does not actually follow from "we need fewer hostile, armed responses to calls and more non-violent options". That could indeed be accomplished by doubling the police budget, with the condition that said budgetary increase be directed toward non-violent responses.
What "defund the police" follows from is "police don't need the capacity to dish out violence on the scale they're capable of", and thing is: it's not like they're magdumping their heavy ordnance into traffic. While I recognize that any violent revolution I want to throw will be hindered by the threat that a militarized police force poses, I'm not currently looking to foment one of those - the status quo is fucky, but I like incremental refinement. I'd rather not toss baby and bathwater all at once. And since I also recognize heavily armed police pose just as much of a threat to any revolutions other people might want to throw, the cops having humvees and .50 cal machine guns actually brings me some small (very small) peace of mind. I'd rather prefer to avoid massive societal upheavals right now. Shit's a little precarious. And frankly? I don't really want to live in your communist utopia any more than I want to live in the Right Wing Death Squad Kali Yuga Surfing Nigger Lynching one, comrade. Everybody's utopia is a dystopia to somebody. -
2023-08-05 at 7:17 AM UTCWhen the progressives start saying "defund", you really gotta question their motives, man. Leftists are all about increasing spending to solve social problems. If they want to defund something, it's gotta be because it's standing between them and whatever goal they want to accomplish. And when the goal you want to accomplish requires making the police less effective at their very important jobs I'm not sure your motives are all that pure. Police play a vital role in our civilization's immune system! And I'm a lot less convinced they're analogous to a fatal autoimmune disorder than I am concerned that 'defund the police' is simply useful idiots spreading a kind of mimetic HIV (some people would like it if we were fatally susceptible to red fever, killed by the communist cold).
