Yes it is exactly that, hence the name shotshell. Shotshell is available in a variety of calibers all the way up to .50 BMG. .22 OR even .38 shotshel is good snakes, rats, ground squirrel, chipmunk, any destructive or dangerous small varmint type.
I use .22 shotshell for rattlers if they are close like 20 feet or less. Beyond that the 20 Guage with NO. 7 does the job just fine. For a challenge I'll use either the Marlin Model 60, the Ruger 10/22 , or the Henry .22 WMR on longer shots. If I want to make them go poof in a red mist then it's either the M1 Garand or the AR chambered in .458 SOCOM. Yeah I know, gross overkill.
P.S. They only are practicle in a revolver or bolt action as they do not produce enough back pressure to cycle an autoloder.
