it's the nose part of the submersible; the viewport was bolted onto the small end

didn't it make like 15 dives prior to this in the same area? how did it manage before that? I thought they made stuff and then rate it at 80% just to give that extra bit of safety -

The apparently descended too fast this time (if you listen to the transcript) and of course each dive probably stresses the chassis and weakens it each time. -
