Could the government do this to cell phones?

I know that's kind of how RFID works. Could they do it to a SIM card?

I'm just curious. I read in the middle east or somewhere where the CIA was doing something evil, they wouldn't trust turning a phone off but using Faraday cages and whatnot. I think this was before smartphones.

since the baseband processor's instruction set is proprietary it's possible that it has a function to power up the rest of the phone or send custom instructions to the main cpu

we know that in the case of the NSA's custom hard drive firmwares/backdoors they had the cooperation of over 30 manufacturers so there's no reason not to think processor manufacturers are just as compliant, especially since their products have to be FCC certified

    badbios was probably a hoax

sure but you still need to physically set up transceivers

    also on topic,

your smart phone never really goes into an airplane mode when you turn on the airplane mode.

True. Your phone communicates even off, with no battery in it, and no SIM.

a lot of these methods yes you do have to know a general area to search beforehand, you cant just pinpoint it from space. most of these is assuming you can meet condition X and Y and if most aren't zero day flip a switch read his thoughts and require and agent to plant the device

that being said we know only the ANT catalog from 2008 and a few others but technology is advancing rapidly. They could have hundreds more that just need one thing you never thought of. They probably thought of that year ago, it's an arms race

to compete against that you have to estimate and predict based on almost zero data what security trends/vulnerabilities come up and hey if you can do that you might as well quit your day job too

people dedicate their lives to this, it's an unstoppable force meets and immovable object

how do I make this work for me

I have a windows xp computer lol

    No...not at all.

30,000ft, plane overhead for literally a split second, 1000s of cell phones under the point of contact...activate and read a sim card.

You've watched too much Mission Impossible kid.

    Never seen it

I hear airplanes all the time though and read all kinds of shady shit the government does. If you NEEDED TO FIND THE PERSON a small amount of fuel in a grid pattern search over an area is a small price from an operations budget, that's nothing

In theory, yes, you can detect powered off radio receivers by sending out a strong signal and then listening for receiver's antenna, which is resonant with the frequency, to retransmit a tiny amount of that energy.

In reality that simply isn't a practical means of detecting receivers.

That didn't stop the Brits sending out TV Loicence Detector vans to drive up and down various streets in order to scare people into paying their Loicence fees (they worked on a similar principle).

NO, I read NSA schematics and it's very simple, thats an average commcercial altitude they designed it to work at those exact heights. They already know what they are looking for and generally where

it doesn't read thousands of phones it reads ONE, yours or whoever they want anywhere they want. and if for some reason that doesn't work they have 100 other wild wacky methods

it's not a matter of if, but when and how. You're not reading/watching not enough anything to not know this.

They have fucking hacks that will rip your composite video signal out through the airwaves by determining the acoustic electric frequency of the RGA signal

in short ,destroy all machines, never use anything made by anyone. That's how to stay safe
