the Indian train derailment that killed 400 or so people was likely due to villagers stealing pegs and bolts off the sleepers and people shitting on the tracks. apparently the flat stones (referred to as ballast) need to be kept clean so that they act as a shock absorber for the actual rails; if they're fouled up (ie. by hundreds of people shitting on them) they pack together and don't move so the movement of a 100+ tonne train deflects instead of being absorbed.
