   you might want to check into that. in a certain HOA that I'm familiar with...state laws trump HOA rules, and where I live if an improvement will increase the heating/cooling/energy efficiency or decrease water/gas/electric usage by xx% (I don't remember the exact number) then the HOA can't interfere or or penalize the home owner.
   
   this was a loop hole that allowed someone I know of to shingle their roof in pure white when the HOA required every house to have a certain palette of the same colors for the house and roof.
   
   that...or toss ziplock bags or waterballons filled with glysophate onto the landscaping of the various board members, president, etc. that always works well to express displeasure at their lack of ability to play well with others. especially the ones who are so into playing little dictator.

    the HOA didn't bother him again until the new board and officers were elected who hadn't been properly introduced, but by then it didn't matter because he was moving anyway.
