But the San Onofre nuclear power plant will loom for a long time as a landmark, its 1,800 tons of lethal radioactive waste stored on the edge of the Pacific and within sight of the busy 5 Freeway.

Across the site, deep pools of water and massive concrete casks confine high-power gamma radiation and other forms of radioactivity emitted by 890,000 spent fuel rods that nobody wants there.

And like the other 79,000 tons of spent fuel spread across the nation, San Onofre’s nuclear waste has nowhere to go.

The nation’s inability to find a permanent home for the dangerous byproduct of its 50-year-adventure in nuclear energy represents one of the biggest and longest running policy failures in federal government history.

Now, the Trump administration and Congress are proposing a fast track fix. The new plan aims, after decades of delays, to move the waste to one or more temporary central storage sites that would hold it until a geologic repository can be built in Nevada or somewhere else.

But the new strategy faces many of the same challenges that have dogged past efforts, leaving some experts doubtful that it can succeed.

Head of United Nations Makes a Climate-Change Apology to His Future Great-Great-Granddaughter: "As I write you in 2023, humanity is losing the fight of our lives: the battle against climate upheaval that threatens our planet."

Very emotive peice by Antonio Guterres in this Time letter series to his unborn future great great granddaughter who hopefully will open this letter in 2100. The UN Secretary-General gives a brief, frank assessment at the state of affairs regarding the climate crisis and even mentions biodiversity loss! He stresses how we well know about this disaster long before forecasted future conditions, how we have the tools and technology for solutions, how certain young people and smaller organizations are raising concern and demanding action, and how world leaders are reluctant to make the courageous, urgent action now to end the use of fossil fuels and global carbon emissions.

Arguably, some hopium is squeezed into this letter with belief we can still stave off a dire future and ensuing civilization collapse, Guterres provides a balanced assessment and outlook of our precarious situation beyond the tiring, positive PR and PC sentiments we often hear from public and business leaders.

The walls are buzzing. I know this because I have a magnet implanted in my hand and whenever I reach near an outlet I can feel them. I can feel fortresses of industry miles away burning prehistoric hydrocarbons by the megaton. I can feel the searing pain and loss of consciousness from when I was shocked by exposed house wiring as a boy. I can feel the deep cut of the power bill when I was living near the poverty line. I can feel the cold uncertainty of the first time the power went out due to a storm when I was a child. How long before the delicate veil of civilization turns to savagery with no light nor heat nor refrigeration?

The grid, smart or not, is wasteful. Power generation produces 32% of all greenhouse gases, more than any other economic sector. Most power in the US is generated by burning coal, immediately squandering 67% of its energy, then run through a steam turbine, losing another 50%, then sent across transmission lines, losing another 5%, then to charge a DC device like a cell phone another 50% is lost in conversion. This means for 100 watts of coal or oil burned my phone gets a mere 16. In this light a solar panel that is 18% efficient doesn’t seem that bad.

Instead of ever increasing our energy production, what if we focused instead on reducing our consumption? I expect power will be at a premium in our first space colonies, and DC only from solar cells. So, I embarked on an experiment to see if I could survive without the luxury of alternating current.

The Green Scare is a piece of forgotten history that hardly anyone talks about anymore (it is an understudied topic in my opinion). During the 1990s and the early 2000s, there was a big green movement in the USA to protect the environment. Animal rights and environmental activists protested against a variety of issues such as animal testing, meat factories, logging, overfishing, climate change, and more, basically any issue related to the environment or animals.

Many protestors were sabotaging or damaging equipment, and burning down buildings. But as far as I know, nobody was killed or murdered by these activists. However, companies had spent years lobbying for the government to take action against them because they were damaging their property and hurting their profits. Then 9/11 happened, and the government used this justification to bring the hammer down on them. Known as Operation Backfire, the FBI made numerous arrests and convictions related to so called eco-terrorism. They labelled the activists as eco-terrorists and went after them relentlessly. This became known as the Green Scare, when the government targeted, arrested, and went after environmentalists.

Eco-terrorism became the Justice Department's Number 1 domestic terror concern, over the likes of white supremacists, and anti-abortion groups which keep in mind have killed and actively harmed people (and are still a problem to this day). The government damaged and shook the foundation of the environmental movement, causing distrust among them. Some activists were let off the hook if they agreed to go undercover (with a wire) to get confessions from other activists that had damaged property, so they didn't know who to trust.

Then in 2009, the Department of Homeland Security raised alarms about the rising threat of extreme right-wing violence which sparked outcry from conservative groups. So they backtracked and disbanded the unit that produced the report.

One side is handed with kid gloves while the other is nearly blasted out of existence.

To give you an idea, of just how bad the divide was just look at what happened to journalist Will Potter. In 1998, as a new reporter for the Chicago Tribune, Will Potter dispersed leaflets that criticized a company for many animal testing violations. FBI agents immediately rounded up and arrested Potter and several others passing out the literature. Weeks later, FBI agents visited Potter's home and threatened him. They told Potter that unless he becomes an informant for FBI and investigates the protest groups, then they would put Potter on a domestic terrorist list. They also made some threats about making sure he wouldn’t receive a Fulbright he had applied for, and making sure his girlfriend at the time wouldn’t receive her PhD funding. Potter of course refused, telling them that there is no way the charges would stick. However this incident inspired Potter to write his book "Green is the New Red" which exposed industry influence over Green Scare-style prosecutions.

    No.

The energy generation mechanism certainly is. Even the waste storage mostly is.

But if you want to argue it is totally harmless, you are either fully retarded or I guess maybe a time traveler from after there has been a huge and convincing public awareness campaign on a scale that has never been tried before that ensure that property values in your area don't tank if a nuclear plant is planned to open near you. Wrong. FirstEnergy. If anything the only reason there aren't a bunch of nuclear accidents by private corporations all the time and terrorists don't already have multiple nukes is because each step of the rollout for nuclear energy and weaponry has been conducted so slowly and carefully, and privatization has only been allowed with such intense regulation.

In part due to the NIMBYs.

The market already solved this issue, it's safe and will never harm anyone, meanwhile we are still cleaning up after the goberment polluting the world with HARMFUL nuclear waste.

  8. The League of Nations become such a walking joke, such a laughing stock, such an utterly corrupt gang of liars, traitors and thieves, that they had to change their name to the United Nations, as if that would really change things one iota. Only a complete fool would take anything they say seriously.

THe UN is a good source of information about illegal drugs and I can verify it was accurate and true to a fault, they don't publish so much detailed info anymore.

I was shocked at what they did publish, secret underground TOTSE ONLY drug making methods and they just put it in a yearly report, pretty cool. But lately they stopped showing the inner working and instead just give seizure numbers and say 'drugs bad'

Originally posted by Ghost The yearly UN drug report gives a pretty detailed number on the amount of cocaine seized each year, production trends, etc etc etc

They used to get VERY DETAILED with it to the point around 2007-08 I believe they had this one yearly report that listed some not well known underground meth making processes and stuff that wasn't easy to find info about and I was shocked reading it from a PDF made by the UN because I heard about it from non indexed closed registration chemistry sites before I saw it there. it's still not that popular of a method

or maybe it is which is why they stopped essentially advertising it, as there is really no way to stop it with regulation. I am referring of course to the L-PAC route of synthetic home brew ephedrine.

    VERY GOOD READ

"here's a list of every analog and how they are made and how to identify them"

their policy is bullshit but they are a good information aggregator of government, police, science and industry.
If you never read a drug report by the UN and think all drugs should still be illegal you are doing yourself a disservice because the reality is numbers don't lie and its laughable to think you can prevent/regulate your way out of this problem

Which is why their policy is to eradicate ALL TRACES of anything that can get you high, even if that means destroying plants and forests so nobody can ever use them ever again. It's evil as fuck

but they can't do that with false data and if they are lying the numbers being higher/lower is nothing but a good sign. Less seizures? more is getting through. More seizures? More is being produced

Sounds like some great reason for NIMBY hot potato. Which literally doesn't mean "no nuclear", it literally means "not here". Nobody wants it "here". Either someone will have to bite the bullet or everyone will, or no nuclear 4 u
