It's not a solved issue because it's one of the few things at one of those exact points in the process chain where NIMBYism actually game theoretically makes sense and is very understandable. It makes sense on every level in fact. Local municipal, city, county, state, country level.
It is essentially just a landfill that is economic poison for the area around it. Everybody wants a nuclear plant, nobody wants to have one big fat, simple dump site in their region. It's not going to receive a bunch of federal funding that anyone with interests could pocket nor market to their voters because they are also justifiably gonna be NIMBYing it.
The real solution to this particular NIMBY issue is that it actually has to be in everyone's backyard. -
