keeping light and heat out of a bedroom

  1. #1
I work night shift, and get off at 6 am. By the time I've gotten ready for bed the sun is up and in SC 8 months of the year are hot.

Black curtains keep the light out, but make it unbearably hot in the room.

White curtains keep the heat out but make it very bright.

Is there a solution to this? Could I put a white curtain on the outside and a black curtain on the inside?

When I used to sleep in the day I just got used to it.

That plus the fact that I used to pass out with lights on all the time made not even be able to fall asleep with the lights off. I can’t remember the last time I slept in a dark room.

You could also just sit in a bathtub full of ice water every waking moment that you aren't at work.

Get a plywood insert. That might help. You can paint paint the back of it white too.

I have blackout curtains that are this sponge-stretchy like white facing the outside and black facing the inside...no clue what they're called but I got them at Walmart so they can't be all that fancy and they happen to do the specific job you require...also invest in an air conditioner.

I have central air but it can't keep that room cool without drastically increasing my bill and freezing other members of the household

Yes. Also check your insulation and make sure other rooms aren't getting hot either. A lot heat can be conducted through the facade of your building too.

adjust the ducting and flow rate to decrease flow to the colder rooms and increase it to the hotter ones
