2023-02-06 at 1:36 PM UTCnew check books $20.
My debit card was compromised again yesterday, I got a notification a POS debit transaction for $149.99 at a Wallyworld on the other side of town. So called to cancel my card, get the money back and ordered new checks while I was at it. -

debit card.
It said POS debit sale so I can only assume they either cloned my card. Not sure how they got my pin number though...maybe they used it as a visa card and just signed (and the description saying POS debit is wrong).
I have alerts setup to send to my phone whenever my card is used so I called it in 10 mins of it happening. -

dunno if it's the same over there but here you don't need to enter a pin unless the charge is over $100 or $200 depending on the bank -

Charge was $149.99 I think it depends on the place/card processing company?...I know for example Aldi always wants the pin even if it's only $5...but other places I've swiped over $50 and not had to enter a pin.
I guess if it was a cloned card they could do the contactless chip scanning? can cloned cards do that? (would make the chip cards pretty worthless) -

2023-02-06 at 1:58 PM UTCyeah I meant contactless, unless you go over the limit they typically won't ask for a PIN
it is possible to skim/clone the contactless data but it's trickier to use than a physically cloned magstrip because of the authentication between the chip and the reader, been a while since I've looked into it -

you mean where you are 70% of the places you spend your money contactless payment isnt available ?
how many of it was simply due to old habits. -

what are the safety features of a contactless card ?
i normally just keep my card in my tactical phone pouch where i can just whip it out at the gas stations and pay for gasses in less than 5 sec. -

again, been while since I bothered checking but I believe they use a simple crypto handshake to authorise payment, but the card data (ie. the number, tracks etc.) is sent unencrypted. that means that somoeone running a skimmer can capture your card info - it won't be enough to make a contactless payment but it will be enough to make online purchases (or EFTPOS purchases if they have the PIN).
however given the simple crypto method, it may be possible for someone who skims your card to calculate the NEXT handshake, meaning if they have the correct setup they can possibly skim your card and make ONE contactless purchase with it if they do it before the handshake changes.
it's possible for someone with a directional antenna to activate your card and capture data from a distance but there are way too many variables for it to be an effective attack unless you REALLY want a specific person's card and are willing to keep at it until you succeed -

is this even posibble considering the length of the cards antenna and the enegry required to transmit a signal that far,
i just think its very unlikely for someone with directional antenna to beam that much energy into the card. -

Aldi don't have contactless, gas station I go to doesn't at the pump (as far as I'm aware). Dollar stores I go to don't either.
Value village does. Subway does (not that I go very often).
ETA:
I'm suspecting Mcdonalds...the only time in the last month I've handed my card to someone is the couple of times I went to mcdonalds for breakfast...I'm guessing the ape who took my card scanned it or something. -

yeah that's one of the reasons it's not really practical
those RFID chips don't really power themselves; they receive a signal from the payment terminal and use the power from that signal to generate and send data back. you'd need to send enough power through the antenna to have the card send back a signal powerful enough for it to pick up.
it's been demonstrated, ie. it's definitely possible but I imagine there's an upper limit on distance where if you send too much power to the RFID chip it'll fuck either the chip or the antenna up -
