You also don't need insurance to drive on own private property or others private property with permission from them. As a young fella me lad I owned many motocross bikes and didn't have insurance on any of them because they were only ever driven off road.
And then the concept of driving without insurance (illegally) never crossed vinnie's mind either even though here in Tejas when you see a junker being driven by a Hispanic it's 99% guaranteed he doesn't have insurance (or legal residence).

He is talking about comprehensive coverage for his possible loss which is not mandated by law. You are talking about liability coverage for damage to others person or property which is mandatory. -
