I think focusing on race/ethnicity here is too narrow - even though it's true and that race (specifically racial interest) is one of the more significant voting blocs, majority groups can, have and will be formed based on anything. The majority of people are of average or lower intelligence and given the tiers upon tiers of bought and paid for beaurocrats in any 'liberal democracy', very easily misled.
I especially like the quote "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what's for dinner", I think it was Thomas Jefferson who said it.
