    Speaking of meters and electricity.

I used to have a Meter in my house back in England...it was a "pay as you go" meter, I guess the previous owner had bad credit or something and I never got around to replacing it.

We had to go to the local electricity shop in town and buy these 5 quid cards that you swiped in the meter to refill it...they only came in 5 quid cards so you'd buy like 30 quids worth and then swipe them all.

It absolutely sucked when you forgot to check the balance and the fucking meter ran out on a Sunday evening and you had to wait till the next day to go buy more cards.

And then your worried about the milk going off or the freezer defrosting.

No srsly though the I've got a key thing for the electric but I seem to be going through a lot

And the gas is ridiculous I have to time my showers at the moment with an egg timer

I remember those tvs you had to rent and put money in the box it was connected every week....if you got found out at school that you had one of them you'd get the piss taken out of you.

As mentioned...the cards came in $5 increments (can't be bothered looking up the character code for the pound symbol)...I bought SPARE cards...and loaded them up all at the same time.

    Try to pay attention!

they're not spare cards if you loaded them all up at the same time. they're spent cards.

a spare card would be unused and sitting on top of your meter, so that it could be used when the shops were shut.

But then that wouldn't be a spare card either...it would be a card waiting to be processed/swiped and risk being lost/damaged/eaten by the dog etc by not being swiped straight away.

There's nothing to gain by not swiping it and everything to lose.

A spare card would be one you never intended to use.

ETA: It's like when homeless people ask me "Do you have any spare change"..."no, I don't have any spare money at all, I intend to spend it all at some point, sorry".

i'm sure there are many cards that your dog doesn't eat. a safe memorable place is not beyond the wit of a smart man like you.

a spare card is one you intentionally use when you unintentionally run out of credit

But then the meter just runs out on Friday night instead of Sunday night (and still Sunday night after swiping the spare card) ...either way you still have to wait for the store to open on Monday...You've gained nothing!

    that can't be real:

"The number of residents reached an estimated 360 in 1930."

like, i'm pretty sure even 100 years ago london had a much bigger population, way bigger. like 100 times bigger
