yeah that's how it was back in WWI and WWII, but this is a little different.
it's mostly been Ukrainians digging trenches because they've been on the defensive; Russia's been using 'mobility warfare' and 'elastic defense' as doctrine because up until the mobilisation they've deployed a much smaller force, as well as relying heavily on standoff weapons.
basically they don't have the manpower to maintain static lines so they rely on surveillance to constantly move their forces around where they're most needed, and if a determined attack comes through (like the breakthroughs in September) they'll either allow them to move forward and bunch up around it to create a defacto cauldron or if not possible, fall back to a more defensible position (like Lyman or Kherson).
once the mobilisation is complete I expect this doctrine will change and they'll start using more aggressive tactics -
