Fire Control locates the target, sub shoots out tube, tube goes to surface, missile flies out of tube, missile drops warhead, warhead goes down to certain depth, warhead goes boom. Doesn't have to be real close to target.
Why? It's a nuke war weapon, easier to kill an enemy sub. Torpedoes take a lot more precise effort to shoot another sub. -

My first time at sea during sea trials after leaving the shipyard they where flooding the negative tank(used to make you neutral buoyant) Chief forgot to close the valve and we started sinking fast before they noticed. I saw the depth gauge clicking over pretty fast and thought I was a goner.
