2022-10-20 at 8:43 PM UTCAOL vs COMP-U-SERVE I think AOL dialup bought out COMP-U-Serve to keep from having competition.
But that was the only way to get on the internet for most people to gateway to it without dsl or coax internet connection. I never experienced the Internet from 1993 - 1998 until we finally got DSL in 1998. they just didn't have it in my town even though its the same stupid copper lines. I think they had to readjust the lines for it to work. I remember the guy had to come back the next week. I was kind of pissed off. but 4mbs compared to the then 56k modem I had was like 20-30 times faster but I don't think the 56k I had got more than 28.8k i had before
Also my first computer had a 4800 not a 9600 bps as my first modem.
the first thing you notice is the lag on typing. it's the weirdest thing and annoying. it felt like you were having a fucking stroke every time you posted on a BBS. -

It was CompuServe. Started in 1969 in Columbus, Ohio. It was my 1st ISP in 1983. H&R Block owned it from 80 to 97 when they sold it to AOL who in turn was bought by Verizon in 15. -
2022-10-20 at 9:20 PM UTCI remember that I had CompUServe first that came with my computer I got around 1992 and it sat in the box because I didn't know anything about Online Service until I found the BBS dialups watching a TV show. then I tried it first (before I found totse)
And first free 5 hours then like 5 bucks an hour or some shit. I got hooked on it downloading a free game.
then AOL sent me a free 10 hours but when the 10 hours was almost up, the Moderator of a channel told me "They will give you another 10 hours free, just have them clear your credit card and get a new number however you will have to make a new user name"
it turned out they did this to create Millions of "Unique Accounts" meaning it was padding their stock values by showing a false users. they inflated their stock value with like maybe 50 thousand of the same users making Millions of Nothing Burger accounts showing it was worth more than it really was. eventually, other people joined for free email accounts but the first years were just a few thousand or several tens of thousands of the same people creating alt accounts. -

What a suckered. I ran on CompUServe for 4 years on accounts I would provide total BS payment/personal info for. Every few months they would discover it, shut it down, and I would make another. Online banking wasn't a thing in the 80s. -

Not a sucker. I only paid for a few hours and then got the AOL right away. the store clearly gave them my Information because I never reached out to them.
also, this is the 1990s and so how can I be a sucker if they changed their paying options. you failed on your comparison of me being a Sucker for being willing to pay for it.
Also you committed banking fraud. -

2022-10-21 at 5:36 AM UTCI started building crystal radio sets at 5 years old. I would sit in the wee hours of the night and listen to the invisible and anonymous voices drifting through the netherworld.

Back then they had build-it-yourself crystal radios that came in a puzzle box. All the components were in a sheet that you would pull off and assemble. It was about $2 for the box, which was quite a bit back then. -
