Illinois’ plan to end cash bail is not a ‘purge law.’ It will, however, stop the criminalization of poverty

I remember when I first went to America, people would talk about being mugged and about crime, even though everyone I met seemed very nice. Even people who got mugged wouldn't talk about who mugged them, but I noticed they'd walk quicker if they were around the group of people who mugged them. It took me a while to figure it out.

All Americans should be looking for reparations from the descendants of those who brought slaves into the country. Back in the day slavers were looked down upon and hated by everyone, especially the white working class.

Under the new law, people charged with a crime can be detained if a prosecutor presents evidence to a judge that a person is 1) a threat to public safety, 2) a flight risk from prosecution, 3) violated any terms of their release or 4) were simply accused of mostly felony crimes—despite the numerous infographics floating around erroneously claiming that judges and prosecutors will be unable to detain people accused of murder and other violent crimes. What the law does is establish a higher standard for detainment.

you think the law should be applied selectively at the whims of unelected officials?

the new system would actually acknowledge both the presumption of innocence and public safety, two factors that cash bail never considers.

you know this doesn't affect incarceration rates unless they go on a rampage and continue to commit crimes during the period they would've otherwise been remanded right
