Stay in school kid. (ETA but makes sure you pay for it your fucking self)
Lol 'personal responsibility'.
Nobody should be responsible for being born in the wrong time period. Nobody should be responsible for the government failing to stop predatory loans for decades. The government's one and only job is to ensure the wellbeing of its citizens. These libertarian fundamentalist ideas do not pan out in real life. Maybe try living in Somalia if that's the kind of government you want. Every modern nation has some form of social welfare, or else there is no point in government at all. Imagine if you had a personal responsibility to build your own roads or check your food for botulism. People argued against things like federal funding of roads, and the creation of the FDA, using exactly the same arguments you're making now.
I'd rather have my taxpayer dollars go back to the actual taxpayers than those bullshit PPP loans the government gave out during COVID. This is less money than that, and gets put to a better purpose.
I've already graduated, and paid for my school, so I don't get anything from this except having a less predatory loan if I ever decide to go back to college. -

Why do all conservatives believe we don't have enough money to pay for this stuff?
USA is one of the wealthiest nations to have ever existed. There are lots of other nations that are able to pull this off with less resources.
What issues does it cause for Norway? For Germany, France, Brazil, Iceland? You tell me.
In the early 1900's, free college was becoming a thing in America. A lot of them would let you work there to pay for your tuition (while also paying you). Now people work at college just to pay off their student loans.
but you wouldn't know any of that. You just think any spending is bad. Taxes bad. Government never do good thing! -

We have LOANS. The government subsidies we have go directly to the schools and not the students. A lot of this goes to dumb shit like needless televisions everywhere and sports shit.
Any American over the age of like, 40 or so, got to enjoy pretty cheap education, just like you did.
What Australians pay for an entire 4-year degree, some Americans pay yearly. Your government caps the amount education can cost with fee bands. The maximum you will ever pay is like 25k (USD) for an undergraduate degree at a public university (we don't have those, we have community college which have limited options for 4-yr degrees that usually just extend to trades/nursing). There are 22yr olds with over 100k+ USD debt here just from school. The lucky ones are healthy and don't need to see a doctor ever. In some US states, if you get school loans, you actually start to disqualify for things like gov funded healthcare or food stamps, which just puts people in a hole of not wanting to attend in the first place.
There really is no other country in the world that has the kind of predatory loan environment the US does, except maybe China. We have the highest tuition fees in the world. -

and we shouldn't be spending tax revenue to subsidise nothing-degrees with almost zero chance of return on investment either.
it's kind of beside the point though, because I personally didn't have my 'education paid for by the state' unless you count primary school. what's that called again where you make up things about the person making the argument rather than dealing with the argument itself? -
2022-08-25 at 3:40 PM UTCSteven/§m£ÂgØL Neighbor: "Hey I want a new fence between our properties, it's going to be $10,000..would you please go halves on it?

Neighbor "Oh well I really want one so I guess I'll finance it myself"
Steven/§m£ÂgØL "OK go right ahead"

Neighbor "Hey I'm having a really hard time right now what with only making $125k a year...are you sure you don't want to help with my fence payments"
Steven/§m£ÂgØL "Yeah I'm sure" /doorslam

Knock Knock on §m£ÂgØLs door
US gov: "Here's the bill for your neighbors $10,000 fence, we've absolved him of his personal responsibility and instead are making you the tax payer pay"
Steven/§m£ÂgØL "but but...I didn't want a fucking fence he did! he signed the loan agreement for it...why the fuck are you giving me the bill?!?!"
US Gov "Well he's struggling on 125k salary and we feel it's now your responsibility to pay it even though you only make 60k"
Steven/§m£ÂgØL "oh right, that sounds fair...do you take a check?" -

Yeah this is what happened.
People signed up for a student loan...they accepted the responsibility to pay it back
They complained about having to pay it back
The gov "FORGAVE" a big chunck of it and passed it on to the TAX PAYER WHO DIDN'T AGREE TO THE LOAN.
..and stop using "literally", it "literally" makes you sound like a liberal zoomer..literally. -

It's not loan forgiveness if the TAX PAYER has to foot the bill...duh.
A private company can do what the hell they like because it doesn't (usually) get put on the taxpayer...it comes out of THEIR coffers.
