You guys focus too much on the stick instead of the carrot. The real strength of the system wasn't in force, it was that it used trade and industrialisation to make people richer. If you wanted some decent clothes back in the day independence wasn't the way to do it. You could fight the system, and maybe even win for a while, but all you would win would be fresh air. Eventually you'd want to engage with the system to get some decent cloth, metal, guns, booze, etc.

This is still the case. If you want to be well off you don't go your own way like Iran or Cuba, or run off to be a hippy, you play ball with the system. -

that's one way to think about it but I don't consider it to be all that accurate outside of markets for some luxury goods. as a general rule the metropolis feeds on the edges - typically the empire would 'buy' raw materials from the colonies at rock bottom proces, then refine them and build items to sell tht colonials could never afford -
