More than once I felt disgusted yet nonetheless I could not stop reading because of how attached I had become with Justine. I wanted to know how her story would end.
Has anyone read this book?
If yes I’m curious if you felt the marquis truly a sick man who enjoyed torture, or a genius who wrote in protest of a corrupt society?
Definitely a sadistic aristocrat with too much free time. And you know how it will end. The same way all those stories end.

I read 120 Days of Sodom years ago, thought it was pretty funny how he was obviously running out of ideas as time went on and the 'tortures' kept getting dumber and more ridiculous

Salo? I started watching it once but there were no rape animals or nerve grabbing machines so I got bored

outside of that the entire idea doesn't really seem engaging
de Sade said something along the lines of wanting to write something so horrific and depraved it'd inspire decay and breakdown of 'polite' society; he just couldn't seem to deliver. it was really only meant to be visceral and disgusting, if you want that I guess you can watch A Serbian Film again
